‘It’s like a horror movie…’ 3-year-old figures out how to open toddler proof door handle

Three-year-old Alex caught in the act of sneaking out of his bedroom.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (FTN) – A pair of Vigo County parents say their life has turned into a horror movie after their three-year-old figured out to open his bedroom door.

The door had a toddler proof style door handle cover.

Parents Chris and Ami Essex said the shock started over the weekend when Alex walked into their bedroom and woke them up.

“Um…so he was quiet about it. We have an old iPad acting as a baby monitor in his bedroom. We hear him wake up, and I don’t want him wandering around,” Chris said.

The parents say this is a first, and now they are afraid they will leave their bedroom in the middle of the night and see Alex standing in the hallway.

“I just…I’m waiting for him to be standing there looking back at me. Or I go to the kitchen to get a drink, and he’s just sitting at the table looking at me. I might pee myself,” Ami said. “It’s like a horror movie.”

Alex says he hasn’t done anything wrong, and that he’s okay.

“I’m okay. It’s okay. I’m opening doors,” Alex told us when we questioned him about the accusations.

On Monday night, Chris and Ami said they had a heads up as Alex struggled briefly with the handle.

“I was in the kitchen making some food. We were trying to catch up on Big Brother…and I hear a rattling sound. The dog is in the living room, the cat is on top of the fridge…at first I was spooked. I looked at my wife like…what is happening? We quickly realized it was Alex struggling with the toddler lock. He got it, and we were waiting, with a camera,” Chris told us.

Both parents admit there’s probably not much they can do moving forward.

“We have a motion detector. Treat our hallway like we are searching for burglars,” Chris said laughing. “Okay, maybe that’s taking it too far…but I don’t know. I think we are just going to have to live with it. We have entered the Endgame.”
