Officials express need for battery donation as supplies dry up

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (FTN) – Officials have expressed concern after recent battery shortage.

On Saturday, we first told you about an emergency battery transplant that involved BeatBo the robot.

While officials say there were enough batteries on hand for that procedure, it took nearly half of the Double-A supply.

“All it takes is one birthday, one Christmas…or really even one new toy where batteries are not includes, and our supply is depleted. That’s enough to create a meltdown,” Dr. JJ Panda told us.

With the holiday season just wrapping up, and Alexander Essex’s birthday nearly one month away, doctors warn the supply is critical.

“Of course donations help. Sometimes it is necessary. But that leaves a different toy without…and when that happens, we can’t promise when a replacement would come,” Dr. Panda said.

Right now, it is estimated there are about 10 toys in Essex’s collection that have become donors.

“Uh, we have a keyboard, a remote control car, a couple of stuffed animals that use batteries. Those are the real heroes,” Dr. Panda told us.

Right now, there is a critical shortage of Triple-A, C, and D batteries.

A battery drive is scheduled for next week, allowing toys to volunteer their batteries, but attendance isn’t expected to be great.

“No way I’m going to that,” said the underside of a Little People House. “My batteries power this whole house, and if they take them…who knows how long it will be until they are replaced. It may sound selfish, but it’s not worth the risk to me.”

If you would like to donate your batteries, bring the proper screwdriver to the kitchen table on Thursday.
